High Speed Ballistic Art

My husband is a very hard worker and puts in about 60+ hours per week at his job

so we try to make his time off as fun for him as we possibly can.

So as a way to combine some interests of ours my husband and I have started a new activity together... 

We have decided to call it "High Speed Ballistic Art"

My Husband loves to do long-distance shooting, and I love to take pictures

so we combine his love for recreational long-distance shooting and my love for photography.

We explore, up-close, the effect of terminal ballistics on stationary colorful objects by capturing it on film.  

(in other words, I take pictures of stuff exploding because my husband shot it)

As I have posted before in my Photography section 

Elliott bought me my very first really nice DSLR camera for my birthday a couple years ago.

I absolutely love it! 

My camera (Nikon D3100) has a sports mode on it in which it catches really small detail moving really fast, and it has a function where you can hold down the shutter button and it will take multiple photos as long as you are holding down the button

(like a machine gun kinda)

This is our new favorite pastime...

 Here's how it goes:

We boiled about a quarter of jug of water and added 2 packs of jell-o to try to make the water more viscous so it would pick up better on the stills. then we added it back to the jug and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours

We picked up a couple little walkie-talkie's because when we first started doing this we were using our cell phones and it was a total pain, this is SOOO much easier. 

When we were using our phones we would have to juggle them while coordinating each end of the "shoot" 

This way, we can just hook these bad boys on our pockets and only talk when we need to.

We had never tried this Jell-o method before so this was pretty exciting!

My husband ranged this out at 136 yards today.  

We ordinarily do it a little further out than that, 

but it rained a LOT on this day and we didn't want to haul out the table and trek through the mud.

With this method on the camera it's really just luck of the draw what shots you get, but that is part of the fun! 

I missed the money shot on this one unfortunately...  but this is still really cool.  

Here you can see some of the vapor left over and lots of water particles in the air.  Very cool.

For the second jug we changed our angle just to mix things up a little

This time I DEFINITELY caught the money shot!  WOW!

The Jell-o really made the water just thick enough to where it really shows up on camera

Wow....

It carved out a big ol' crack in what before was a completely intact seat

That's how powerful this "explosion" is!

Oh well, I'm not too worried about the stool.  

 You would think that the bullet would just swipe it off the top of the stool, but it didn't.

It transferred all that energy in just about every direction, including down.

I tell you what, my yard smelled nice and fruity after this experiment!

We have already prepared for our next "shoot" and used half the jug of water and use twice as many Jell-o packets so hopefully it will be even more dynamic!

We have so much fun doing this together and of course the best part is coming inside and hooking the camera up to the computer and looking at the results.
